BASIC BROWSER CONCEPTS

  1. Secured Web Sites
  2. Upgrade Browser / Programs
  3. Navigating the Internet
  4. Printing from the Web

    1. Secured Web Sites

    • Site Certificates
    • Cookies
      • Cookies are short pieces of data used by web servers to help identify web users. If your browser is set to not accept cookies or uses the new cookie blocking packages, it will prevent some online services from working.
      • With systems that require login (i.e., banking, bill payment, eshopping, etc.) enabled cookies retain information that allow access after logging in.
      • Your browser must be set to accept cookies when accessing these applications:
        • ePurchasing
        • uPortal
        • Student Employment & Cooperative Education (SECE)
        • UH Online Admissions

    • Firewalls
      • Firewalls are programs or hardware devices that filters the information coming through the Internet connection into your private network or computer system. If an incoming packet of information is flagged by the filters, it is not allowed through.
      • Firewalls are customizable therefore giving you the ability to add or remove filters based on several conditions.
      • If you are from a State or Federal Office (many of which have firewalls on their computer network), you should first verify with your internal tech support and then inidicate to the UH office (which you are working with) so alternate means of service can be established.
      • Some firewalls are not configured to access sites with non-standard port numbers. MIS applications use non-standard port numbers that may affect your ability to access the site.

    • HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol via Secure Socket Layer)
      • HTTPS allows client and server-side authentication through certificates, which have been in turn signed by a Certification Agency.
      • When connecting to a secure part of a website, signified by "https://":
        • You are entering a secure site. This prevents unauthorized people from seeing the information sent to or from the site.
        • A pop-up dialog box/window will appear if it's your first time entering the site OR as long as you haven't installed/accepted the certificate.
        • A picture of a lock will appear at the bottom right of your screen.
        • Both the server and client can demand a certificate from each other. If the certificate presented by the server is unknown to the client, the client is free to accept or reject the certificate. This works in both ways.

    • Ports
      • When dealing with "https://" (which is for SSL or secure connections), the standard or default port number is 443.
      • When dealing with "http://" the standard or default port number is 80.
      • The above two points are important because MIS applications use non-standard port numbers that may affect your ability to access the site.
      • You need to make sure you type in "https://" instead of "http://" when tyring to access a secure site.
